Sonata No. 1 In D Minor Op. 109
For Cello And Piano
Immediately After His Second Violin Sonata Op. 108 Faure Began In The Spring Of 1917 A Sonata For Cello And Piano In Attack And Thus Realized A Long Cherished Plan. Both Plans Are Very Closely Linked In Terms Of Investment And Gesture. In The Cello Sonata, Too, A Darkly Dramatic Opening Movement Is Followed By A Calm Relaxed Slow Middle Movement And A Graceful Finale. The Echo Of The First Performances Remained Subdued, But Thanks To The Increasing Interest In The Entire Late Chamber Music Faure, This Sonata Has Recently Been Rediscovered As A Significant Part Of His Work. With The Henle Urtext Edition, The First Critical Edition Of The Work Is Now Available. For The Designation Of The Cello Part A Master Of His Field, David Geringas, Could Be Won.
